Gigs

Gig's is a new career connection app designed specifically for hourly workers. The app is creating a marketplace that matches businesses with hourly workers based on the leading indicators of reliability: geographic location and shift availability. I partnered with them as their UX and design lead to uncover why their click-2-apply (C2A) metric was falling and design new features to increase user engagement.

Problem & Research

In order to know what to design, we first needed to understand the problems users were experiencing with the app. A product manager and I spent a month interviewing and surveying users, analyzing competitors, conducting a heuristics analysis, and reviewing hours of active user sessions to uncover the specific issues.

We drafted a 60-page Product Requirements Document (PRD) detailing our findings and recommendations and the priority in which we should tackle each item. There were two big key findings:

  1. Search was both cumbersome to use and often wasn’t returning relevant results.
  2. Gigs needed to do more to entice users to apply to multiple jobs in a single session.

Search

UX, A+B Testing & Design

Search was the biggest problem users had with the app. The UI was tall and took up half the screen, and the filters used outdated terms and were cumbersome to use.

After reviewing our options we decided Elastic was the best search tool to satisfy our users' needs. We reviewed the documentation, updated our taxonomy terms, and developed a few high fidelity wireframes for user testing to determine which UI best worked for our target audience.

Of the options in the slider below, the first direction was the clear winner. From there, we applied the updated brand styles and launched it to instantaneous success with the C2A rate doubling week-over-week.

Gamification

In addition to improving search, our research revealed that Gigs could do more to encourage users to apply to multiple jobs within a single session. 

A strategist and I developed a concept to gamify the user experience, enticing users to bulk-apply to several positions in just a few minutes. To achieve this, we retooled the app to function more like a shopping cart experience rather than a one-at-a-time application system. 

We then designed a universal job application that users could build and submit for every job added to their cart. To introduce this new bulk-apply concept, we created a pop-up that displays a list of jobs aligned with the user’s desired designer salary and encourages them to add at least six jobs to their cart to apply at once.

The success of this feature was also instantaneous with the C2A rate tripling within the first month of launch.
